Equine Guided Education

Gaits to Growth employs an approach known as Equine Guided Education (EGE) to provide educational experiences like no other. Our programs are often compared to ropes courses in their focus on building problem-solving skills. But the EGE experience goes further, using the interaction between horses and humans to also gain insight into behavior and emotions.

Equine

The way people interact with horses tends to be very similar to their interaction with family members, classmates, peers and colleagues. Horses are social, herd animals - when working with humans, they consider us part of their herd. They reflect the emotions and energy of the people around them and provide immediate and honest feedback in their responses, which can offer valuable insight into group and relationship dynamics.

Guided

With safety measures firmly in place, our well-trained staff guides participants through teamwork and problem-solving exercises. Along with many other benefits, working with a large, responsive animal enhances self-esteem and confidence. We also develop exercises and activities specific to your group or school, providing countless opportunities for discussion and learning.

Education

Our programs require no previous experience with horses and can be integrated into your group's existing goals - whether enhancing science and social studies lesson plans or corporate teambuilding. Our programs offer participants a chance to interact with horses on the ground in situations designed to develop leadership, criticial thinking and communication skills. Our focus is on providing a fun and rewarding experience in which all of our students learn - without even realizing they're learning!

Participants in EGE benefit from experiential exercises geared to developing self-knowledge and responsibility. The learning framework includes:

For school aged students, the EGE curriculum integrates academics and critical thinking skills, motivation and responsibility, leadership and problem solving skills. It offers hands-on learning that can be taught to each person’s individual learning style.

This curriculum also incorporates a strong character/behavior development program that corresponds to the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets (http://www.search-institute.org/ ). The characteristics are concrete, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to raising successful young people. These assets have the power, during critical adolescent years, to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. The results are dramatic and the character development portion of the program is unmatched.

With the aggressive goal the State of Kentucky has in place for its schools and students, 100% Proficiency on the CATS scorecard by 2014, KY Gaits to Growth is positioned and eager to partner with Kentucky’s educators in meeting this challenge.
